Daddy's Bar-Be-Que Sauce

Pud has this recipe on welovegumbo.com but I remember it a little differently. So you can compare and decide for yourself. Ju always made this for our family gatherings at Pete's. So psst, Ju, we could use your input!

1 stick butter (I leave out 2 T. and/or substitute some with olive oil)
28 oz. bottle of Heinz ketchup
1 onion, chopped
2 T. brown sugar
1 t. Worcestershire Sauce
1/4 c. vinegar or lemon juice
2 large or 3 small cloves garlic, minced
2 t. mustard
1 t. chili powder

Put the butter on low heat and add the chopped onion. Cook until the onions are transparent. Add everything else and bring to a boil. Cut the heat and simmer for 30-45 minutes.

  1. OK, I just talked to Nannie. The original recipe did not have garlic and Worcestershire - like on Pud's blog. But when I made it with Daddy one Sunday he had me put those things in. (probably experimenting) He was especially happy about the garlic so I'm going to leave those things in.

  3. Hey I made it yesterday. It was delicious. I kept "tasting" it. It goes well on a pizza. Made a BBQ pizza with the sauce, chicken, pineapple, and diced tomatoes.

  5. Sue, The original recipe from Grandma does not have garlic or worcestershire in it. Daddy probably added for flavor. I'll admit when making sauce for Easter I added garlic and onion powder to the recipe since it always seemed a bit sweet to me. Happy Valentine's day! Julie
